What is verticutting?

A form of mowing

A method of mechanically removing much of thatch. (power-ranking in Bahiagrass.)

Verticutting is a turf maintenance method that uses vertical cutting blades to slice into the turf canopy and physically remove the thatch layer—the mat of dead stems and leaves that sits between the green shoots and the soil. By pulling out much of this thatch, the procedure opens up air spaces, improves water and nutrient penetration, and stimulates new growth, helping the lawn become denser and healthier. It’s a mechanical dethatching technique, not mowing, pruning, or fertilization. In warm-season grasses like Bahia grass, verticutting is used when thatch buildup is heavy or the lawn appears compacted, and it’s often followed by light topdressing or overseeding to help recover after the removal.
